Journalists Urged to Respect children rights in their reportage

Journalists have been urged to exhibit professionalism in their line of duty especially when reporting on children.

According to communication officer of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Ghana, Offeibea Baddoo the Ghanaian media in some cases have shown high level of professional guidelines when reporting on issues relating to children, however much is to be desired.

Madam Offeibea advice comes at a time some media outlets fail to adhere to the rights of children by portraying pictures and other identifiable forms of children in their reportage.

“Some of the reportages have not been becoming at all, they have not dignified children, they have not respected the right of the child or whatsoever” she said.

While commending section of the media on ethical reportage of children Madam Offeibea queried “if this was your child or somebody had done this to your child or you are done this when you were a child, how would you feel about it”

The communication officer of UNICEF Ghana reminded journalists that “in a bid to be excited about a story, stop to think about if it will affect the child.”

She made this advice during UNICEF’s regional media meeting with some selected journalists in the Upper East region. The meeting which sought the inputs of journalists on the rights of children also empowered them to be advocates for children through their reportage.
