Education Circuit Supervisors in the Talensi District have been called upon to show commitment to their work in order to improve educational standards in the district.
The call was made by the Talensi District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) when it carried out a survey in the area. The DEOC praised some circuit supervisors for regularly visiting their assigned schools as expected.
The DEOC in its report after the survey observed that some circuit supervisors even though they visited their respective schools, failed to write in the teachers’ log book and apply appropriate sanctions against offending teachers where necessary.
District Chief Executive for Talensi, Edward Awunuure who doubles as chairman of the District Education Oversight Committee said the committee’s report also identified some schools in district with inadequate furniture and some other schools having their roofs ripped off.
According to Mr. Awunuure the report also saw massive failure by heads of some schools in the district to ensure discipline of their teachers. He said the report also observed that quite a number of young girls in the district became pregnant before they sat for the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Meanwhile the circuit supervisors who were happy about the District Education Oversight Committee’s report said fourteen to sixteen Ghana cedis fuel coupons which are given to them every week is not enough for them carry out their responsibilities of monitoring teachings in various schools of the district. They said the frequent upward increases in fuel prices reduce the value of the fuel coupons.
