tree-plantThe people of the Nabdam District of the upper East have decided to cultivate the culture of growing trees in order to avert foreseen negative climate changes in future. They say this will go a long way to replace trees that are cut down for firewood and through galamsey operation in the district.

The declaration was made at a climate change conference that brought together chiefs, queen mothers, religious leaders, opinion leaders, politicians as well as assembly members in the district on Tuesday at Kongo.

Deputy regional Chief Disaster Control Officer of the National Disaster Management Organization, Paul Womah said climate change impacts negatively on society, thereby creating the need to organize the conference to adopt measures of averting negative climate changes in the Nabdam district.

Mr. Wooma was not happy about the degradation of lands by illegal miners in the District and called on leaders to wake up and do some thing about the situation.

District Chief Executive for Nabdam, Vivian Anafo said negative climate change is what has resulted in erratic rainfall pattern that the region suffered this year. She said the impact of this poor rainfall will be a reduction in agricultural yields, increased pressure on water bodies and a reduced potential for hydropower generation, leading to increased poverty and food insecurity in the country.

Mrs. Anafo therefore called for the formulation and enforcement of environmental legislation, ethics and education in order to secure the environment for future generations.
