In order to help achieve the Millennium Development Goal 3 that calls for the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection with support from the Department of Women is embarking on a four-year Gender Responsive Skills and Community Development Project.

The project aims at improving national capacities for an enhanced gender mainstream and improved access to quality skills training for gainful employment and entrepreneurship for women.

The project which started in 2009 with sponsorship from the Government of Ghana and Africa Development Bank has rehabilitated 25 Community Development, Vocational and Technical Training Institutes with the aim of increasing the admission of girls into them. This was made known at the launch of the campaign in Bolgatanga on Thursday.

Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Women, Joycelyn Adii said the project which is being implemented in five districts of the Upper East Region out of 59 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country has successfully sponsored 39 girls from poor backgrounds to pursue non-traditional professional trades for a period of three years.

Miss Adii added that the project has also provided 15 computers for the Navrongo, Bolgatanga and Bongo Community Development and Vocational Institutes and a motor bike for the regional directorate of the Department of Community Development. Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme said women’s contribution to the socio-economic and political development of the country should not be underemphasized.

He therefore challenged women and girls to pursue technical trades in order to be at parity with their male counterparts.
