The Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayokor Botchwey has disclosed that the ex-Gitmo detainees were granted refugee status by the National Democratic Congress before they left power in 2016.

The minority NDC Members of Parliament had accused the government of constitutional breaches and disrespect of the Supreme Court over failure to communicate the decision on the two ex-detainees.

But the Foreign affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on Wednesday told Parliament that despite the expiration of the two-year contract agreement between Ghana and the United States of America, the duo will still continue to stay in Ghana.

She indicated that the cost of their stay, will, however, be borne by the Ghanaian Government.

She, however, stated that government was thinking through the whole process and exploring various options.
