The Upper East Regional Director of Highways, Philip Samini, has disclosed that government is working prudently to construct four new bridges in the region to enhance mobility.

Speaking on Day-Break Upper East on A1 radio with Samuel  Mbura via a phoned interview, Mr. Samini said he has been officially informed of government’s intentions to erect “real befitting” bridges for the region.

According to the engineer, the bridges will be constructed in Doninga and Sisili, with the Garu and Kulumbungu bridges rebuilt into new ones.

Mr. Samini said the disclosure is good news for the people of the region and credit for government.  He added that the developmental process of the region is greatly dependent on good roads and bridges, hence government’s commitment.

The regional highway boss’s revelations come after A1 news broke a news story on the deplorable state of the Pwalugu Steele Bridge Monday.

The Pwalugu steel bridge built about 30 years ago has not received any significant facelift.  As a result, the deteriorated bridge now puts the lives of commuters, traders and residents at risk.

Mr. Samini has however responded that his outfit would move to assess the level of damage on the bridge for possible rehabilitation work to commence.

Mr. Samini also took listeners through possible causes of defects in bridges. He said vibrations beyond fitting limits from heavily loaded vehicles in motion can cause the collapse of a bridge. Additionally, bridges that have lived up a substantial part of their design life or may have reached a certain period where they can’t function any more can collapse.
