The newly elected chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, Lawyer Anthony Namoo has threatened to drag some members of the party in the region to court for defaming his character in the run-up to the last Saturday’s election.
According to the private legal practitioner, comments made by some members of the party in the heat of the campaign were full of “negatives” which have a tendency to damage his hard earned reputation as a lawyer.
Marking this remark after he was sworn into office with other elected executives after they were elected on Saturday April 21, 2018, Mr. Namoo observed that there have never been serious defamatory allegations against candidates in the history of the party in the region like it happened this year.
Lawyer Anthony Namoo secured 124 out of an expected 303 voters beating four other candidates in the chairmanship race including the then incumbent, Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim.
The chairman said in spite of the defamatory comments made against him which he described as untrue, “the results showed that the truth will always stand” and therefore members of the party should know that “it doesn’t pay to go on the negatives against a party member”
Lawyer Anthony Namoo has therefore given a strong indication to persons who defamed his character to retract in writing or he directs his lawyers to sue them in court.
“Some of the statements are so defamatory that, I as a lawyer, they touched on my professional integrity and I will have no choice but to tell my lawyer to write a letter to some of them for retraction and if possible a court action otherwise my status as a lawyer is under threat because of some of the defamatory statements that were made” he issued.
Despite his caution to take legal action against some members of his party, the new chairman has pledged to work with all members of the party “to make the party great and strong” in order to get more parliamentary seats and increase the party’s presidential votes come 2020 and beyond.
Mr. Namoo congratulated all elected and defeated candidates as well as delegates and sympathizers of the elephant party in the region and beyond for a successful conference.
