2 killed, 3 in critical condition in Bawku

Two gunmen Monday night July 23, shot and killed two men and left three others in critical conditions when they victims were traveling on a tricycle from Bawku to Garu in the Upper East Region.

Abdul-Aziz Ayaaba, a presenter at Source FM in Bawku, told William Jalulah, host of Reporters’ Visit, a news and current affairs analysis programme on A1 Radio on Tuesday, the victims, mainly men, were heading from Bawku to Garu but on reaching Zabgo community, they ran short of fuel and while waiting by the road side, they saw two men on a motorbike approaching them from Bawku direction. Unknown to them that the riders wielded a gun, they signaled them to stop apparently to ask them for assistance.

According to Aziz, they assailants slowed down as though they wanted to stop but in an unexpected bravura, one of them opened fire on the victims killing two of them instantly and injuring three.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with this reporter, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Yao Tettegah, said the injured are in critical conditions at the Presbyterian Hospital in Bawku. He explained that the victims were chased and crossed by their assailants before they were shot.

Though he admitted the police had not made any arrest at the time of filing this reporter, he explained the police had already talked to some people he declined to name. He further said a Municipal Security meeting was to be held to fashion out security measures to adopt in hunting for the assailants.

Chief Superintendent Tettegah described the incident as purely murder and not robbery and assured the police have already launched investigations into it.
