Some health workers posted to the Kulungungu health center in the Pusiga district of Upper East Region have refused to report due to lack of staff accommodation.

Head of the facility, Beatrice Bakomdi Yaro, who revealed this exclusively to A1 News, said the lack of accommodation has compelled staff to stay in the Bawku municipality and travel daily to provide health service at Kulungungu, a situation she laments affects healthcare delivery.

“It is hindering health delivery in the sense that when they [health workers] are posted here, they come newly and they are not on salary. Even the little they accumulate to come look for accommodation, we don’t find accommodation in Kulungungu because it is yet developing and so staff are compelled to stay in Bawku and travel to and fro”

The Kulungungu health center which is located in the border town of Pusiga district also provides healthcare services to neighboring Burkina Faso.

Head of the facility lamented that owing to the lack of staff accommodation, health workers posted to the facility often try to “use all manner of excuses wanting to go back to wherever they come from.”

Mrs. Bakomdi added that the lack of water supply to the facility is another challenge affecting the center.

“One of the items we need is water. If there is no water, you can imagine taking care of a client when you should have washed your hands with water [and] it is not there, then you transfer whatever you carried from one client to the other bringing about cross infection.” She said.
