The Upper East Region over the years has experienced issues of land disputes which have sometimes resulted in the loss of lives. Encroachment of public lands by individuals and organizations is another problem the region has been facing and this hinders development in the region.

In order the address these challenges and many other land-related problems, a nineteen-member Regional Lands Commission was on Wednesday inaugurated in Bolgatanga. Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Yaw Effah-Baafi at the inaugural ceremony, charged the nineteen-member commission to work assiduously to reduce problems associated with lands in the region and the country at large.

Mr. Effah-Baafi said land administration in Ghana over the years has faced serious challenges including insecurity of land tenure, difficulty in accessing land, poor land records management, weak administration systems and protracted land disputes. He said the ministry of lands of Natural Resources has launched the national land policy in order to address these challenges.

Out-going Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru said most land encroachments in the region come about as a result of improper documentation. He therefore charged the members of the lands commission to do diligent documentation of state lands in order to avoid future encroachments by individuals and organizations.

Chairman of the Upper East regional Lands Commission, Alfred Afulani Ajene while entreating members of the committee to live up to the task assigned them, pledged to work hard to reduce land disputes in the region.
