Delegates of the Distance Education Students Association of Ghana(DESAG) of the College of Distance Education(CoDE) of the University of Cape Coast have converged at the WAEC Hall in the Ho Municipality in the Volta Region, to elect new National Executives.

About 400 delegates from all ten regions of Ghana arrived on Thursday for the three-day National Congress. This year’s congress is the 11th edition of the Students Congress.

The Delegates are made up Regional Executives Elect, Out-going Regional Executives, immediate past National Executive and Course and Centre Representatives.

This year, have the duty to confirm or deny the sole Candidate for the National President position, Emmanuel Appiah Amoah.

He is expected to poll a minimum of 50 percent plus 1 vote to get confirmed at the President of DESAG for the 2018-2019 Academic Year.

Over the years, there have been regional alliances and friendship which have either influenced or contributed to the outcomes of elections and this year, same dynamic will come to play.

Depending on the alliance and friendship connections that the Ashanti region has with the remaining nine regions, and the performance during the manifesto presentation, the sole National President Candidate, Emmanuel Appiah Amoah, from the Ashanti region CoDE could be confirmed or denied by Delegates.

A National Vice President of DESAG, Fuseini Mohammed Suale in an interview with a1radioonline.com said the Association is a vibrant one and fast growing and so needs vibrant National and Regional Executive to see to the welfare of Students and liaise effectively between the students and CoDE.

“Like SRC is important to students on campus, DESAG is very important to Distance Students. With a student population of over 40,000 and so no one can ignore DESAG nor its leadership, be it at the Regional or National levels.”

According to Mr. Suale, there are a lot of challenges faced by leadership, especially as National and Regional Executives are expected to combine their Executive duties with academic work, in the face of inadequate funding for DESAC Regional and National activities.

In his view, the Distance Education system have come to give a many people who hitherto would have had the opportunity to access University Education, because of work and inability to sustain themselves on a University campus.
