The number of deaths associated to the mining accident at Gbane in the Talensi District in the Uper East Region has risen 17 as at Thursday, January 24.
From an initial number of 5 deaths, the number got to 13 on Wednesday and now 17. There are however some 4 miners who are still on admission.
The management of the Upper East Regional Hospital disclosed the new number when the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo and other members of the Regional Security Council visited the mine workers on admission at hospital. They also went to mortuary to confirm the number of deaths.
Management of Upper East Regional hospital has called for support in the form of oxygen to manage the overwhelming casualties following an accident that occurred in a mining community Wednesday leading to death of some mine workers.
Dr Patrick Atubrah, Medical Director of the hospital made the appeal on Thursday. He advised relatives of victims who are still believed to be living in the community without proper medical care, to be brought to the hospital for proper medical care.
Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo said help is being sought from health agencies to replenish the hospital with oxygen as more victims are still being brought to the hospital.
The Minister later led Security Officers and others to Gbane, to ascertain the state of the community and to also to ensure that Shaanxi Mining Company, which is providing mining support to some concession owners, comply with the Mineral Commission’s order to halt operations.
