Member of Parliament for Tamale Central in the Northern Region, Inusah Fuseini has asked government to treat the recent arrest and alleged torture of some two journalists of the modernghana.com portal with all the seriousness it deserves.
He believes the attack on the media and journalists is becoming consistent and persistent and something must be done about it before it becomes a trend.
“It’s time this government woke up to the realisation that the fourth estate of the realm is under a barrage of attacks.”
He was speaking on Bolgatanga based A1 Radio on Tuesday, over what the constitution says about the use of torture to retrieve information from suspects, with emphasis on the modernghana.com journalists.
According to him it is unconstitutional for anyone irrespective of position or role in society to torture anyone under arrest and at no point should that be tolerated or condoned by any government or group.
“The constitution of Ghana forbids torture in all its forms and so you cannot use torture as an instrument or means to retrieve information. The constitution frowns upon it. It is a violation of the fundamental human right of the person who has been arrested to be tortured.”
Asked on the programme if he agrees with Manasseh Azure’s claim that NDC government was more accommodating about criticisms by journalists than this NPP government, Hon. Fuseini said it does not help anyone to reduce attacks on journalism to comparison between two administrations.
“I think that they must deal with what is happening now as has never happened and that is why we condemn it with all the vehement now. If we reduce it political partisanship the grievousness of the offence will be lost.”
