NHISOfficials of the National Health Insurance Authority at Bawku in the Upper East Region say the problem of foreigners from Burkina Faso and Togo taking advantage of their proximity to Ghana to enjoy free healthcare, still remains a major challenge and a threat to success of the National Health Insurance.

At a stakeholder’s meeting in Bawku, the officials said it was difficult to prevent the influx of Burkinabe and Togolese Nationals into Bawku and its environs to enjoy Ghana’s health insurance.

According to them, the foreigners are often aided by Ghanaians who provide them valid information such as names of their landlords and valid house numbers which they use to register for health insurance.

Bawku Scheme Manager for the NHIA, David Samari said this problem was the most form of abuse of the Bawku scheme. He said plans were far advanced for the implementation of a capitation health insurance scheme in Bawku.

Information System Manager for the Bawku Health Insurance Authority, Thomas Abanga rolled out plans for the strengthening of the scheme through improved technology. He said biometric registration of NHIA clients was one sure way of improving on the system to avoid issues of impersonation and duplication.
