A seasoned Communicator with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, John Paul Danka has descended heavily on authorities of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly (BMA) for failing to address the sanitation situation in the Municipality.
He expressed disappointment about how refuse and faecal matter are disposed and poorly managed in an open land site located in Sherigu, a suburb within the Bolgatanga Municipality.
Paul Danka raised his dissatisfaction on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio and blamed successive Municipal Chief Executives for paying lip services to the predicament and sanitation related hazards residents in the Sherigu community have been exposed to. He added that the open nature of the dumping site can cause an acute outbreak of cholera in the area if not checked urgently.
“Successive MCEs have not actually helped the community of Sherigu. I went and saw the dumping site, these are bare virgin lands, as a matter of urgency if nothing can be done, they should fence it, nothing is holding anything back, and it is nothing to write home about… The distance from there to the township is not much… It is causing serious contamination… I understand two kids lost their lives” he lamented
He therefore suggests that the best solution to address this awkward situation in the long run will be the acquisition of a recycling plant and the relocation of the dumping site for the faecal matter.
Meanwhile, a Communications Team member of the NPP, Osman kariyamah who was also a panel on the Show expressed similar sentiments about the poor sanitation situation in the region especially the Bawku Municipality and called on authorities to expedite actions in order to avert any casualty associated with the poor management of sanitation and waste in the system.
