Upper East Regional Coordinating Council has districted a total of 3,640 bags of confiscated Planting for Food and Jobs Fertilizers (PFJ) to vulnerable farmers in the region.
In the months of June and July this year, the police in Navrongo and Bolgatanga intercepted trucks loaded with over 10,000 bags of PFJ fertilizers that were been smuggled into Burkina Faso.
After those trucks were impounded, the regional minister, Tangoba Abayage announced that the confiscated fertilizers were to be distributed to poor farmers and other vulnerable groups including widows and Persons With Disabilities.
In fulfillment of her promise, Ms. Abayage told host of A1 Radio’s DayBreak Upper East show, Samuel Mbura on Tuesday that each of the fifteen assemblies in the region received 200 bags while 300 bags went to PWDs. She explained that the remaining bags were yet to be given out to widows.
The minister also revealed that there are bags of fertilizers at some police stations in the region after same were impounded by the police. She, however, explained that the RCC is unable to touch those fertilizers because they are being used as exhibits in court.
Ms. Tangoba further disclosed that an extra 2,000 bags of PFJ fertilizers earlier impounded and sent to her official residence have also been deposited in the RCC warehouse pending further action.
She, however, indicated that she has asked the State Attorney to seek permission from the court to enable the RCC to dispose of all those fertilizers that have court cases surrounding them.
