Cedi management goes beyond standing at Wulugu to take a bus to Walewale –John Paul Danka

The management of an economy and the Cedi is a serious business that goes beyond talking and assembling the  ‘league of excellently  failed gentlemen’’ this is the observation made by a Communications Team Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Paul Danka.

He made this observation in a panel discussion on  A1 Radio on the establishment of a 40 member committee to investigate the cause of the cedi’s depreciation against international currencies.

The Government of Ghana through an order from the President Nana Akufo Addo to the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Attah has directed for the establishment of a Foreign Exchange (FX) Development Committee to investigate the structural causes for the depreciation of the cedi and to propose measures to address the situation as part of efforts to regulate the supply and demand of forex in the country.

The committee comprises a representative each from the Finance Ministry, Agaric Ministry, Bank of Ghana, Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), and IMANI Africa among others.

But , Paul Danka who has a vase experience in political communication  for the past 15 years said, though it is in the domain of the government of the day to take financial decisions , there was the need for him to add his views because economic consequences were not selective.

According to him, the composition of the team has already flawed its purpose because some members of the Committee such as the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Attah and Trade Minister ,Kojo Alan Kyeremanteng have exhibited incompetence in handling the economy.

“You cannot bring the individuals who have been appointed to manage the various facets that can lead to the cedi’s depreciation to one table what  I call the league of excellent failed gentlemen that you want to investigate why the cedi has depreciated… Cedi management is not  like picking up your bag and standing at a bus stop at Wulugu to take a bus to Walewale ”  he retorted

He added that the NPP government has so far exhibited a high sense of irresponsibility and incompetence in rescuing the economy from heading towards an abyss adding that , the Economic Management Team of government has gone into oblivion.

The economic management team died long time. Ghana is in autopilot, our economy is in autopilot we are now leaving on what we call the free -floating-affair.Today if things are ok oya ! if things are not okay oya!.. there is nobody directly in the  NPP today in their financial  management team that you can hold him down and ask what is happening! He stressed

Mr. Danka however, proffered an alternative to government pointing out that if the Ministry of Trade was able to realize government’s initiative  of One District ,One Factory it could have helped in strengthening the Cedi since could curbed or reduce  importation in the country.

Meanwhile, Constituency Secretary for Navrongo Central Constituency who was part of the panel discussion impressed upon Ghanaians to remain positive about measures government has put in place to improve the economy.

In the first place, I don’t expect the NDC friends to speak well about this government because it has been their prayer that this government should fail so that they will rejoice and if possible come back to power but God being so great, failure is not on our side. The government is doing well so far as economic management is concerned because it is not about coming on radio to say it, the data speak for itself comparatively when you compare the NPP’s management and the NDC” .
