In the wake of the spread of novel Coronavirus which the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recommended washing of hands with soap under clean running water among other measures, residents of Dorongo-Apirika community, a surburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region have no source of potable drinking water.

Though their predicament has persisted for over decades, it has become urgent a clean source of water for household activities and consumption especially, in this time of the outbreak of diseases in the country is provided.

The residents say, the only borehole in the community is over 40 years old which has outlived it’s purpose.

“We are having only one borehole and it is always difficult to pump it. Even if I wake up on bed at 4: am to come and fetch one gallon of water so that I can bath my children to go to school I will spend an hour and the children will end up going to school late or absenting from school. The situation is affecting the academic performance of my children, so I am appealing to government, MP and all stakeholders to come and help us with a new borehole,” a resident told A1 News in a random interview.

According to the residents, several efforts have been made to draw the attention of authorities to the situation to no avail. They are therefore appealing to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and benevolent organizations to come to their aid.

“We have contributed money on several occasion to fix the problem but we have come to realize that, this borehole has not seen major repairs since it was constructed over 40-years. Some parts of the borehole are not even available in the market to buy. All efforts to fix the problem of the borehole has not been successful. We are now calling on the municipal chief executive and his office to come and help us from this crisis”, another resident lamented.

Meanwhile, Assembly Member for Dorongo Electoral area Martin Agaare Adongo, told A1 News that the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly was aware of the challenge, and also pledged to follow up at the assembly level to ensure the problem is fixed.
