Residents in Kouka and Dulugu communities, suburbs in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region are calling on relevant authorities to come to their aid and work on some newly demarcated roads which are posing danger to their lives.

The roads, according to the residents have been constructed three years ago with the aim of helping them to have easy access to their farmlands , but are now making movement to and from the communities difficult especially in the raining season as the culverts of these roads are broken.

A resident said, “If it rains today, where we are standing now; just at the back of my house, we can’t even stand there, and not to talk of discussing issues. Anytime it rains, we usually ask our children not to go to school because the culverts are too big and shallow that makes crossing difficult for them”.

“We didn’t ask them (representatives from the district assembly) to come and dig these death traps for us and failed to have them worked on. They should come and either work on them (culverts) or we will advise ourselves come December 7th”, another resident told A1 News.

But the Assembly Member for Dulugu and Kouka electoral area, Alenye Thomas Atiah explained that not only was the situation affecting their human movement but economically.

“During the harvest season, majority of farmers usually leave their farm products to get rotten at their various farms for lack of accessible roads to cultivate their produce home. Anytime it rains the culverts are usually full to the extent that they (culverts) can hold water which can last for more than months without running dry”.

Meanwhile,District Chief Executive for Bolgatanga East District, Rev. Emmanuel Abugri Abole though expressed concern said the issue has not come to his attention and assured the residents that the Assembly will put up temporary measures that will ensure children have access to their various schools in the rainy season.
