ONGOING TRAINING OF POLICE RECRUITS AT THE PWALUGU POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL MUST STOP, UPPER EAST REGION – NDC

The attention of National Democratic Congrass in the Upper East Region has been drawn to media reports of an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Pwalugu Police Training School.

The Ghana Health Service [GHS] in the Upper East Region which collected over 600 samples from police recruits at the Pwalugu Training College as part of their heightened surveillance and submitted same to the various testing centers in the country has resulted to over 199 police recruits testing positive of the novel COVID-19 in the region.

This has ballooned the region’s COVID-19 cases from the initial 42 to 241 making the Upper East the 6th highest region in the COVID-19 case count in the country. This latest development is causing fear and panic among the populace throughout the region.

This has also increased the number of districts infected with the disease from 5 to 6. This so because, the Talensi District which hitherto had zero cases now tops the list since the police Training College is located in the district.

This unfortunate development in the training school is well expected because the government defied experts’ advice and secretly admitted students into the police training schools nationwide in the wake of this COVID-19 pandemic. The end results unfortunate though, is the worsening off of community spread of the COVID-19 throughout the country.

It must be emphasized that the region over the last three weeks had zero- active cases since the initial 26 active COVID-19 cases were treated and discharged from the treatment center at the Upper East Regional Hospital, Bolgatanga according to GHS.

The recent infections from the Police Training College in the region is most likely to over stretche the capacity of the treatment center, logistics and human resources since a number of health workers have already been infected with the COVID-19 in the region.

According to our reliable sources, the region has almost run out of testing strips and Personal Protection Equipment [PPE], which is affecting their testing strength and exposing the Health Workers further to the infection of the disease.Already the COVID-19 situation in the country has been worsened with over 12,193 cases and 58 deaths and counting, following the hasty easing of the restrictions by government to pave way for the NPP primaries and the compilation of the needless new voter’s register, and not for the good of this country.

According to experts, if steps are not immediately taking to reverse this trend, the health system is most likely to be overwhelmed culminating in more mortalities.

The increment of the COVID-19 cases in the region, especially in the police training school, with a fraction of the results in, is a worrying issue to the NDC party as a key stakeholder.

This unfortunate development should be a learning curve to our teacher unions because now that the government has reopen schools for final year students of Universities, SHS and JHS including second year Gold track students of SHS they should prepare for this, because some students or pupils coming from their various homes may be carrying the virus and may infect their colleagues inadvertently.

The party is therefore giving the government a one week ultimatum to immediately stop the training and close down the Pwalugu Police Training School to prevent further exacerbation of the already dire COVID-19 situation in the region since GHS is yet to receive results of most of the samples submitted, or face the wrath of the party, the good people of the Talensi district and the general populace of the region.

Long live Upper East Region!!!

Long live Ghana!!!

Long live NDC!!!
