Women in the Yebongo community, a suburb of the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region will now heave a sigh of relief following the construction of an ultra-modern CHPS compound by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to enhance health delivery.

According to residents, the absence of a health facility in the area over the years have negatively affected maternal and emergency medical health care in the area particularly in the night.

Speaking to A1Radio News, after a handing over ceremony of the facility for use, some women in the area, commended the assembly for its timely intervention to addressing their health needs.

They added that, the burden of having to commute several kilometers outside the community to seek health services was over.

A pregnant woman, Ayine Azumbila said, “I was afraid about the miles I will have walk to the regional hospital for antenatal checkups but now that fear is no more because with some few walk I will be at this facility”.

“After my first born, and the difficulties I passed through, I told my husband that I will never want to get pregnant again. But now that decision has changed because this health center is just at the back of my house so there is no need to worry about long-distance walk”,  Adonpobire Roland stated.

Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Joseph Amiyuure Atura, credited the NDC government for initiating the project which has been completed by the NPP government.

He assured that, the assembly will ensure the provision of all the medical essentials needed for a seamless operation of the facility.

“This is a common fund project and was awarded in 2016 by the then NDC government but was put to hold due to inconsistency in funding.  So, when we(NPP) took over power from them, as an assembly, we have made efforts to complete the project, to bring relief to women and caregivers in this community. And we are happy today to handover this health facility to the residents of the Yebongo community.

Also, I will make sure we provide the needed medical equipment for the smooth operation of the facility so that women and children will no longer walk miles to seek medical care at the regional level”.

For his part, the Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Health Services Edmund Nyanwura appealed to leadership of the assembly to expedite action in equipping the facility.

The GHC 442,965.51 CHPS facility funded by the assembly’s common fund consist of  a labor ward, two consulting rooms, records room, OPD and a three-bedroom apartment to house health staff.

The contractor, Mr. Jasper Ayoore of Messrs Yornesco Enterprise, however, said the project missed out on its scheduled completion in January, 2020 due to delays in releasing funds, adding that the assembly still has not paid him in full.
