Congratulatory messages continue to pour in for former Minister for Education in the erstwhile John Mahama Administration, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on her nomination as the Vice Presidential Candidate to former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

The latest to congratulate Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman is Ghana Action for Progressive Democratic Thinkers (GAPDET). GAPDET is a political research, PR and Communications organization.

In a statement issued on July 13, 2020 by President of GAPDET, Francis Atayure Abirigo, the group recognised the enormous contributions made by Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in the circles of academia, national development and politics to the nation Ghana over the years and has no doubts that Ghanaians will give their mandate to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to bring needed development to the people of Ghana.

GAPDET also expressed gratitude to Mr Mahama and the leadership of the NDC for the decisiveness, wisdom and forward thinking in arriving at this choice of a colossal running mate in the professor.

The statement said, “GAPDET is even more happy that at a time that some Ghanaians including a whole majority leader of our parliament in the person of Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and a political party (the New Patriotic Party) led by its Communications Director, Hon. Yaw Buaben Asamoah do not believe in women, the former president and for that matter the NDC has reached such a decision that women matter and that women have come a long way to deserve to occupy the highest office of running mate and vice president subsequently.

Indeed, having considered the pedigree and performance of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as Vice Chancellor and Education Minister critically, this group has no doubt that given the opportunity she will be one of the best running mates and vice presidents in contemporary times.

We believe that John Mahama backed by the female professor makes the NDC presidential team a solid one going into the 2020 General Election and that should be good news for their party.

We refer the doubting Thomases to Liberia where a woman in the person of H. E. Johnson Shirleaf led that country successfully for two consecutive terms and ask them to wake up from their slumber for the world is now directing their energies at giving women the opportunity in leadership positions to serve because they are loyal, loving and not disappointing. In fact, it is primitive today to say the least for anyone to imagine or conspire a thought that women do not qualify or deserve to occupy leadership positions.”

According to GAPDET, Prof. Opoku Agyemang brings to the table a solid management and leadership competencies and a gamut of constituencies of women who believe in themselves, the academia and largely the university population in Ghana and more.

“It is therefore preposterous for anyone to say she adds nothing to the John Mahama bid”, the statement added.

While praying for Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang to prove this by bringing the value in her to bear in the campaigns that have just begun, the group also urged Ghanaians to continue to fight to empower women to develop our country.
