Residents of Kalbeo, a suburb of the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region have vow not to allow politicians to campaign in the community if their foot bridge is not fixed.

According to the residents, the contractor working on the foot bridge has abandoned the project for the past months due to government’s failure to pay him in order to expedite work on the project.

The residents have given government and the contractor an ultimatum of two weeks to resume work and fix the project or incur their wrath.

Speaking exclusively to A1 News, the residents expressed their dismay at government’s posture towards the project and warned, to turn away any politician who comes to the community to campaign for votes.

The residents expressed fear that, heavy downpour could destroy their properties and cut them off the central business municipality, as the bridge under construction cannot withstand any torrential rains.

A resident, David Akolbila said, “Yes, for the suffering we have suffered for so long in the hands of politicians but our message is simple we don’t want to see them here again unless our bridge gets fix”.

Another resident, Atinga Thomas, stated that, “Looking at nature of the bridge, if it rains heavily, those of us whose houses are closer to it will definitely be in trouble.”

“We are giving the contractor and as well as the government, two weeks to come to our aid or better still come and cover this pit [bridge] which they have created[dug]or they would risk seeing the other side of us”,  Akolgo Edmund warmed.

But the contractor working on the project, Mr. Martin Amaana (Amaana and Sons company) said, the project has failed to progress due to government’s indebtedness to him.

Meanwhile, the Assembly member for the Kalbeo electoral area, Asokiyine Matthias who spoke off record said, efforts are been made to get government call back the contractor to expedite work on the project.

Efforts made to get authorities of the Bolgatanga Municipal feeder roads comment on the matter proved futile.
