The National Youth President of the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism (GAPA), Abdul Mumuni Adam, has called on albinos to be vigilant and take their personal safety seriously ahead of the 2020 general elections.

According to him, in some parts of Africa, persons with albinism are usually killed for ritual purposes during elections hence the need for adequate measures to protect them.

His comment comes at the back  of an appeal made by the Communications and Advocacy Advisor of the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism, Adam Wahab Abdul to the governing, New Patriotic Part to put in measures that will protect them ahead of the general elections.

Speaking on A1 News, Mr. Mumuni Adam, said, though they expect the government to provide them with protective mechanisms, members should as well device protective means to stay out of trouble as the elections approach.

“It is a persecution that when you kill an albino and perform some rituals you will get what you wish for. It is wrong and not true but ignorantly, people still go around with this negative thinking to harm innocent people seen as albinos.  So as the election is approaching we are calling on the government to provide adequate measures that will protect the integrity of persons with albinism.

More so, I will entreat my colleagues to be vigilant and should not see everyone as a friend especially politicians at this time because we all have varied thinking to things and you may not know who thinks what at which point.”

Mr. Adam, also admonished persons with disabilities to take radical steps at protecting themselves during this year’s general elections.

“Each and every person with albinism or disability should take care most especially with these political leaders. With your disability, you may think that he or she is your political godfather and will not have the bad intention of you but that could be overlooked.

So, I will advise that as the months of election approach my colleagues should take care and make sure they close early from their work to avoid any misfortunes.”
