The Zoomlion Ghana Limited in the Upper East Region, has appealed to relevant authorities of Municipal and District assemblies in the Upper East Region to enact and implement sanitation by-laws that will punish perpetrators found dumping solid waste indiscriminately.

According to the company, indiscriminate disposal of refuse has become the norm of most people in the region and can only be tackled if authorities begin to enforce and punish perpetrators involved.

The Public Jobs Manager of the company, Mr. Kojo Njabeore who spoke at the third phase disinfection and fumigation exercise in the Upper East region, explained that, the only solution to curtailing the sanitation menace was for authorities to start the prosecution of perpetrators.

“It is not a day thing and we can not achieve the targets we set for ourselves as sanitation officers and managers in the region if we are working in isolation but with law enforcers prosecuting offenders then we can achieve our goals as officers.

And we have to do it together so I’m calling on various districts and municipal authorities to begin cracking the wipe on offenders found discriminately dumping waste.”

Mr. Njabeore, also, suggested that various municipal and district assemblies can also begin awarding individuals or groups that practice good sanitation habits to serve as motivation to others.

“Yes, if authorities can also start awarding people who either report perpetrators to them or practicing good sanitation habits it will help. This though slowly and expensive but can help in ending illegal dumping of refuse.”

The exercise targeted various public and private tertiary institutions in the region to be fumigated in order for the continuous students to report.
