Articulated Truck Kills Woman

car accidentHUMAN AND vehicular movements came to a standstill on Sunday evening at about 7:00pm when an articulated truck ran over a 22-year-old woman killing her instantly on the Bolgatanga-Zuarungu stretch of the Bolgatanga-Bawku highway.

The Upper East Regional Commander in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Daniel Kwao Tey who confirmed the incident said the deceased, Azure Adongo was been ridden on a motorbike by a young man on the way from Bolgatanga towards Zuarungu when the accident occurred.

He explained that after Timber Market, the rider who picked the woman overtook an articulated truck without observing if there was oncoming vehicle. In the process, he collided with another motorbike from the opposite direction.

The Police Commander said the woman slipped under the articulated and the truck overran on her upper body. Her liver, heart, womb and intestines all gushed out and she died instantly. He rider sustained a fracture but the other rider and his pillion rider escaped with only bruises.

The body Azure has been deposited at the Regional Hospital Mortuary while the injured rider is on admission at the same hospital.

The articulated truck with registration number GR 4871 X was impounded by the MTTU for the driver to assist in investigations. Our investigations showed that the deceased woman was a relative of the owner of the articulated truck.

According to ASP Kwao, 14 persons died during the first quarter of this year as a result of road crashes. Though he said last year’s statistics showed that 15 persons died during the first quarter as compared with 14 this year, there was the need for all stakeholders to approach road crashes with all seriousness.
