Some members of the Commercial Farmers Association in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region say they will no longer wait to experience the trauma they went through last year due post-harvest losses. They, are therefore, liaising with buyers from both local and international markets.

The farmers, numbering about 67, say they anticipate bumper harvest this year and will not rely only on government for markets.

Speaking to A1 Radio, Organizer of the Commercial Farmers Association in the Builsa South District, Enoch Akisiba, explained the strategies they as farmers have put in place to secure themselves such markets.

He said, “We do not want to get to where last year we did [where], so through our own initiatives, we have been able to strategize the kind and quality of crops that have ready market. Also, the right quantities of fertilizers are being considered by all farmers to avoid food toxicities. This year we as commercial farmers mean business.”

He added that with the support from the district assembly, they have been able to interact with some buyers from various organizations that have shown willingness of their produce.

Mr. Akisiba also added that, “Our district Agric director last week, called us to have an interaction with some buyers and other experts on the way forward of good farming practices and yields. Some of the buyers also assured us of their readiness to buy our produce whenever and wherever with reasonable prices.”

He said majority of them have expanded their farm sizes which means they expect large volumes of harvest.

He said, “This year we cannot say much but it will not be the same as last year. And I must add that we have expanded our farmlands so we expect bumper harvest this year.”
