seat-belt-from-stock-exchangeMore than one week after the start of implementation of the Legislative Instrument mandating all commercial vehicles to fix seatbelts, the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Bolgatanga says no commercial vehicle have been brought there for licensing yet.

Parliament passed the legislative instrument two years ago to help deal with the high rate of road accidents in the country. It is expected to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in deaths and serious injuries associated with vehicle accidents by 2020.

Section 119 (1) of the LI states: “A person shall not drive a motor vehicle unless it is fitted with a seatbelt.” Implementation of the LI began last Monday with the DVLA no longer registering new commercial vehicles if they do not have seatbelts fitted for each passenger.

Since then, the Bolgatanga office of the DVLA is yet to receive a commercial vehicle for licensing, according to the Technical officer, of the DVLA in Bolgatanga, Mutawakil Abdulai.
