Bagbin beats Mike Oquaye to emerge Speaker of 8th parliament

Ghana’s longest serving Member of Parliament (MP), Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

The outgone Nadowli Kaleo MP on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who also served as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of the previous parliament beat the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, the previous Speaker of the House, to emerge winner.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Bagbin promised “Wholeheartedly to put at the disposal of parliament and the country the store of knowledge, immense experience and the huge data-bank I have accumulated and accommodated in the 28 years that I have been a member of this House.”
