The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention, Janet Asana Nabla has expressed disappointment in the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, over his list of ministerial nominations.

According to Janet Asana Nabla, the list presented to the Speaker of Parliament is not encouraging because the President didn’t consider gender balance in his nomination and believes that the President has disappointed many Ghanaians, considering the number of capable women in his party and the crucial roles they played in his campaign.

She spoke in an exclusive interview on A1 Radio’s current affairs program, “Reporters’ Visit” in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

“My problem has to do with the number of people the President has already taken, and when you look at the gender balancing on the list it is not well balanced. I said it, and I’m saying it again, that when you look at the Constitution of Ghana on the Directive Principle of State Policy, Article 35 Section 6 (b), It has stated that whenever the President is going to make appointments, he is supposed to put on the gender lens to make sure that gender is taking into concentration when he is making appointments.

Why did the President violate this rule in our constitution? It is something that is boggling my mind. Why is it that we don’t want to use the constitution in doing things? How can you bring out a list of 46 nominees and out of this, less than seven are women. It beats my imagination.” She said

Madam Asana, however, said the president’s decision to cut down on the size of his ministers in his second term is commendable because it will go a long way to cut down on the cost of running the country.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday 21 January, 2021 submitted a list of nominees for various ministries and 16 regional ministers to parliament for prior approval by the Appointment Committee of Parliament. Out of the list of 46 nominees, only 6 are females.
