A1 Radio has gathered that a Bawku-bound bus crushed into the Nasia bridge in the North East Region in the early hours of Tuesday, January 26, 2021.

It is feared that over five persons were seen lying lifeless at the accident scene, while many sustained various degrees of injuries and were yet to be taken to the hospital. About 20 persons in critical conditions were rushed to the Walewale District Hospital and the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The 45-seater bus from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region was heading towards the Upper East Region with passengers, many of whom are students who were yet to report to various schools after reopening.

A passenger told A1 Radio that he was on seat number 23 and kept hearing a female voice complaining persistently that the driver was sleeping.

According to him, the bus ran into the right side of the metal barricade of the bridge over the Nasia River soon after one of such complaints.

Another eyewitness said the accident was due to brake failure.

Meanwhile, A1 Radio can confirm that there is very little movement across that bridge as the accident bus lies supine in the middle of the bridge making it impossible for other vehicles to cross.
