President Akufo-Addo has indicated that the University for Development Studies in Tamale in the Northern Region will be named after former President Ft. Lt Jerry John Rawlings, as a sign of honour for his service to Ghana and the university.

He was speaking at the final funeral rites of the Late Former President Jerry John Rawlings at the Independence Square in Accra.

It will be recalled that former President Rawlings had donated the seed money for the establishment of the University for the Development Studies in Tamale, before the university spread its campuses to Upper East and Upper West Regions.

According to President Akufo-Addo, naming the University after former President Rawlings will be a great honour, especially for the important role he played in the establishment.

“While he was with us, he respectfully declined an offer I made to him in 2017 to have the University Development Studies-Tamale, which he personally helped establish, named after him. His reason was that in adhering to a long-standing principle, he did not want any national monument or facility name after him.

Two days after his passing, at the 21st congregation of UDS, I expressed my strongest convection, despite his reservation that such an honour should be accorded him. I am glad that this has found favour with the family and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, that is, the Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies-Tamale.”
