An Educationist, Nii Armah Addy has called on educational bodies and government to take lessons from the impact of Covid-19 and restructure the educational system in Ghana.

“Technology is the way to go and in the wake of Covid-19, implementers and educational bodies should be looking at how they can provide students with devices that can assist in online teaching and learning.” He said

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Addy noted that a study has been conducted and has revealed that in every house in Ghana, there is the use of a smartphone by one or two persons and if the government can channel resources towards that direction; it will help greatly in the educational system.

“Be it the physical infrastructure and then the human resource required to teach IT. I have suggested and strongly remain that what we can do with the computers and other bulky machines, we can do that with a smartphone. We should reduce everything to smartphones because research has shown that there are more smartphones in Ghana than the population itself. This means that every household has a smartphone. What government can do is to make sure acquiring of data and others as well as transferring educational materials can be sent through these phones to every learning child. We have come a long way with our education and should not allow Covid-19 to take that away from us.”

He added that the idea if implemented will help the government and educational bodies to reach the students fast than the E-Learning programs which are usually shown on TV.

“E-Learning is usually shown on TV and not every household has a TV or connected to the National grid. So, it doesn’t get everywhere. But with smartphones and available data to assess these topics, the students will be willing to get more information than any other thing. It will also help fight against the spread of Covid-19 as there will be no body contacts. ”

Mr. Addy’s comment comes at a time pressure group, Occupy Ghana is calling on the government to immediately ban all social gatherings which include Schools until there is a drastic drop in daily Covid-19 infections in the country.
