Parents and caregivers in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have been admonished to ensure their wards return to the school for academic work after the closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Talensi District Director of Education, Emelia Adisa Abdulai, the students have over stayed at home and any further delay in sending them back to school could affect their academic performance.

She said this on A1 Radio in line with the ‘Back to School’ campaign; an initiative by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) which is geared towards persuading students who are still at home to return to the classroom.

“The children have strayed at home for far too long, and some of them have forgotten what they were taught previously. Some have also gone to seek greener pastures elsewhere.”

“So we’re creating the awareness for parents to know the importance of getting their children back to school as well as the new entrants who are yet to join.” Madam Adisa said.

On his part, Public Relations Officer for the Talensi District of the Ghana Education Service, Maurice Korah, observed that some of the students have been engaged in galamsey activities and others in commercial work over the 9-month period of school closure.

Mr. Korah bemoaned that the adolescents; especially girls were more vulnerable as many have reportedly gotten pregnant during their long stay out of school.

He therefore admonished parents and caregivers to ensure their wards return to school to continue with their academic work in order to secure a brighter future for the children.
