The Ghana Statistical Service has announced that it will begin the 2021 Population and Housing Census in April 2021.

The exercise which is done every 10 years, could not be done in 2020 probably due to the emergence of Covid-19 in Ghana. The last time the Ghana Statistical Service conducted the Population and Housing Census in Ghana was 2010.

The aim of the exercise, according to the Ghana Statistical Service is to capture and provide accurate human and housing information from all the districts and municipalities in Ghana for planning and development purposes.

The government’s Statistician and Chief Census Officer at the Ghana Statistical Service, Professor Samuel Kobina Anim, made this known at a training workshop organized for journalists in Tamale.

“The census is the only activity that is able to give us disaggregated data at the lowest level. We do surveys we do census; the GSS has been in existence since 1948, we do surveys we do censuses and there is no activity that is comparable to the Population and Housing Census that takes us beyond the district level.  Even when we are doing our Living Standard surveys, when we are doing our demographic health surveys the sampling is from the region straight to the enumeration areas. It is not representative at a district level.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census will take us to all the 260 administrative districts and for ease of operations, there are 272 statistical districts.

We don’t end there, ahead of the census we do a data demarcation exercise and as a country, for now, we have identified over 131,000 localities and communities. The information that we are going to provide to be at the locality level.

For purposes of our work, we have identified 2000 enumeration areas and we are working towards 11,000 supervisory areas. This is the level of disaggregation that you get from the census.” Professor Anim said in an address.
