18 dead, 45 injured as Garu bus collides with Zebila bus on Buipe-Tamale highway.

18 persons have died with 45 injured in a head-on collision between a bus said to be carrying passengers from Kumasi to Garu and another bus from Zebila to Kumasi.

The accident reportedly occurred on February 3, 2021, at about 0012 hours at Sarekyekura  near Fufulso on the Buipe-Tamale highway with each of the buses carrying about 45 passengers at the time of the crash.

According to the police, “16 persons made up of 12 male adults, 3 female adults and 1 female child died on the spot. 45 persons on board the two vehicles sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Buipe Polyclinic and Holistic Medicare Hospital at Buipe for treatment. 1 female adult later died whilst receiving treatment at the Holistic Medicare Hospital.”

The drivers of both buses with registration numbers GT 3345-16 and AC 1699-20 respectively have been confirmed dead. the police added.

Meanwhile, A1Radioonline.com sources indicate that 1 more person has died while on admission bringing the death toll to 18; at the time of filing this report.

The deceased persons have been conveyed to Tamale Teaching Hospital Mortuary for preservation awaiting identification and autopsy.

Though, the cause of the accident was yet to be established, this crash has renewed calls for Ghanaian authorities to enforce traffic rules to reduce deaths on roads in Ghana.

These recent accidents are particularly worrying to residents of the Upper East Region because barely a week ago, 11 people were killed with over 20 injured when a Garu-bound bus crashed into the Nasia metalic bridge in the North East Region.
