In the midst of what many describe as a keen contest for the position of the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), a two-time Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Rex Asanga, has shared his stance on the contest.
He is among some 14 persons who are said to be contesting for the position to serve as MCE for the Upper East Regional capital in the 2nd term of President Akufo-Addo’s government.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, he said most of the persons vying for the MCE position consulted him; and he advised them to go on and contest.
“I attended the interview; so I’m part of the 14 or so people. I don’t fault those who applied, because these are the preliminary stages. It’s short-listing at the regional level. Eventually, the regional executives after the interview will send 3 names to Accra.
Assuming people decide that because of Mr. Rex, we will not apply; and later the president decides to offer me a different appointment. They will be disadvantaged because they did not apply to be part of the initial short-listing. You can’t go back and say now that Rex is no more going to be a candidate for the position of the MCE, we should start the process all over; claiming you didn’t apply because Rex was part.”
So a lot of the people consulted me saying ‘we want to apply but we’re thinking that you should go unopposed’. They called to consult me but I asked them to feel free and apply. Because you never know what the president is thinking.”
Mr. Asanga was however quick to add that “some of the people only show up when it is time for positions. We never see them when it is time for campaigning. They will not be part of any campaign, they will not make any contribution but when it comes to position, they want to be part of it. That is politics.”
Information available to A1Radioonline.com indicates the immediate past MCE, Joseph Amiyuure will no more contest for the position this term.
Notable among the persons contesting for the MCE position according to our sources are Rex Asanga, Agana Bawa Rashid, Elvis Figo, Ayoore Thomas, Martin Ayinzerigo, Madam Comfort, Hon. Abileo and Daniel Ayine.
