Calls have been intensified for Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to be considered flagbearer for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) without any internal political resistance.

According to proponents of this idea, allowing the Vice President to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo will make it easier for the party to win the next general elections.

Not only that, it will also clear the perception that, anyone from Northern extraction cannot lead the NPP perceived to be for only Southerners.

The latest to add his voice is one of the Financiers and once upon a time, Upper East Regional Chairman contestant, Filson Awankua.

He made this assertion on A1 Radio during an interview that “Our friends in the NDC keep telling us that NPP will not allow a Northerner to lead it”

But according to him , the time has come for that particular perception that a Northerner can never lead NPP to be cleared. And the only way of ending this false perception, notion in the Ghanaian voter is for us [NPP]all to resolve to allow Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead us.

Mr. Awankua warned that, ” If we fail to clear this perception of an Akan party and that a Northerner cannot lead the NPP by failing to fill Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer, the price we will have to pay will be so heavy for the tradition not just NPP that even our grandchildren cannot pay.

He is therefore appealing to his Party members who have Presidential ambitions to shelve it for the betterment of the NPP and it’s political fortunes.

“Some of us will appeal to members of our party that we have our individual ambitions but the time has come to shelve such ambitions in order to allow the tradition to survive. You need to demonstrate as a party member that you have the party’s interest at heart. It shouldn’t be about your ambitions. It should be about the collective good of the party,”. He stressed.
