President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday delivered his first State of the Nation Address in his second term in office.

The address was in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution which mandates the president to present to Parliament the address at the beginning of each session of parliament and before the dissolution of parliament.

Among areas, the president addressed were the Covid-19 response, the economy, construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam among others.

The president also spoke about plans to construct airports for the Central and Western regions.

“Construction of the second and third phases of the Kumasi Airport, second phase of Tamale Airport, and rehabilitation of the Sunyani airport, are all proceeding satisfactorily. A decision on the siting of the proposed airport in the Central and Western Regions is imminent.”

Conspicuously missing in the president’s address was plans to construct an airport for the Upper East region. The Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah before the vetting committee of parliament claimed that the impact of the COVID-19 affected the construction of an airport for the people of the Upper East region.

Nonetheless, the transport minister announced that funds will be made available for the project to start this year.

It is against this backdrop that well-meaning residents of the Upper East region had expected the president to reiterate his commitment to constructing an airport for the region during his State of the Nation Address.

Unfortunately, the president did not state if the current government has plans to construct an airport for the people of the Upper East region.
