The leading waste management company in the country, Zoomlion Ghana has handed over an 80-acre piece of land in Sherigu in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region to Hydronomics Limited for the construction of Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant.

The construction of the plant in the Upper East region will add up to other regions that have benefited from the Zoomlion Ghana and the government of Ghana initiative to construct waste plants in all regions of the country.

The brief handing over the site comes after President Akufo-Addo who was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer for the Juspong Group of Companies, Joseph Siaw Agyepong to break grounds for the start of the project in the Upper East region in October last year.

Upper East Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana, John Sackey indicated that the project when completed will be used for treating liquid and solid waste as well as medical waste.

“This compost plant will be used for treating solid waste, liquid waste, and medical waste. We would also have an engineered land field site so that all the materials that can neither be composted nor recycled, will be properly put in the land field site. We would also have a medical treatment facility. And with that, all the infectious waste that would be coming from our hospitals will be treated properly before they are disposed into the environment.”

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu affirmed government commitment in partnering with Zoomlion Ghana in advancing the progress of the country. Mr. Yakubu stated that the project when completed will offer direct and indirect jobs to the youth in the region.

“The vision of the president and for that matter, NPP party has resulted into this partnership with Zoomlion. And we are so happy that the thinking of setting up this integrated recycling and compost plant in all the 16 regions is a laudable idea. The investment here is going to create a lot of employment for our youth in this region”

The minister entreated the construction firm, Hydronomics Limited to preserve the environment while working to build the plant.

“I will entreat the contractor to be very environmental friendly. As they build this plant, if they remove one tree, I will entreat them to plant one tree and if they remove hundred trees, I will entreat them to plant hundred trees. Because that is going to help to sustain our living in this region.”

The building of the Upper East Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant which has started is expected to span in 4 months and handed over to Zoomlion Ghana for operation. Cletus Akana, the Site Supervisor for Hydronomics Limited, said his outfit will work to meet the timeframe.
