Upper West Regional Water and Sanitation Agency have revealed that the region has over 64% water coverage at the rural level.

In an interview with A1 Radio Upper West Correspondent, the Regional Director of Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Dodji Messan Attiogbe said the agency supplies water to over 667,891 people in the region representing 74.13% which is above the national level.

He said none of the water systems in the region is receiving water from a stream but through the boreholes system.

Mr Attiogbe explained that in the Upper West Region none of their systems is taking water source from the stream unlike other parts of the country where they tap from the stream.

He further explained that in their case all the water sources are from the boreholes and base on the yield they decide what kind of mechanized borehole or facility to put up base on the population of the community to see which system will serve them best.

Mr Attiogbe says sometimes the demand for water is high especially during the dry season which they are able to meet the demand but they understand the situation because during the rainy season people have alternatives sources such as rainfall water and streams, so with the same population but the demand for water will be low.

He said, in spite of the tremendous achievement, more needs to be done to increase access to potable water and attributed the agency’s inability to score 100% to lack of enough resources.

Mr Attiogbe, was hopeful that resources will come from the national level to help the agency extend its services to the remaining communities.
