Failed robbery attack results in death of two robbers

An attempted robbery that failed on Saturday afternoon has led to the death of two suspected robbers in Nyariga, a suburb of Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region.

The two robbers were allegedly killed in a mob action by community members following a failed attempt to rob a trader at gunpoint of his cash and motorbike.

The angry mob burnt one of the robbers on the motor they rode while the other was given a hot chase and subsequently lynched.

According to an eyewitness account to A1 Radio, the two armed men rode on a motorbike and accosted their victim in an attempt to rob him of his cash and motorbike.

The eyewitness accounts added that the robbery attack failed when the victim overpowered his attackers and disarmed them which led to the fracturing of the arm of one of the alleged robbers.

Meanwhile, a team of Police personnel comprising of the Regional SWAT Unit swiftly proceeded to the crime scene at Nyariga following a distress call and saw two partially burnt dead bodies and identified both as notorious criminals, Yahaya Lawrence an ex-convict and Awudu Abdul Hakeem who was recently granted bail by the Bolgatanga District Court in a case of possession of ammunition without authority.

The crime scene was secured by the police, processed and photographed while the bodies have been deposited at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

It was also gathered at the crime scene that the deceased were in possession of an AK 47 rifle, but the rifle cannot be traced. Efforts are underway by the police to engage the community leaders to assist them trace and retrieve the rifle.

The incidents of armed men robing residents of Bolgatanga has been on the ascendancy with residents calling on the police to deal swiftly with the increasing crime rate within the municipality.
