As the rainy season sets in, stagnant water in open drains makes life unbearable for residents of the Agric-Mohiyabihi electoral area in the Tamale Metropolis.

Residents say the open drains make life difficult and unbearable thus described the drains as death traps.

According to the residents, the stagnant water in the drains serves as breeding ground for mosquitoes, making it all season malaria-prone and expressed fears that apart from being vulnerable to malaria, their chances of contracting cholera and sleeping sickness are high.

Assemblyman for Agric-Mohiyabihi electoral area, Mohammed Mutala in an interview with A1 News said the situation that his people are currently facing is a very challenging situation.

He lamented that residents have rather turned the open drains in the electoral area into dumping sites which is an unfortunate situation.

Mr Mohammed said, it is regrettably that within his jurisdiction, there is no public land to secure a refuse container for dumping of refuse, stating all available lands have been occupied by residents.

He was, however, quick to add that as an Assemblyman for the area, he has been educating the residents of the area on the dangers that their actions pose to their lives.

He said with the education that is going on, most of his people have adopted various strategies in order to remedy the situation.

Mr Mohammed assured that he is liaising with a waste management company, Zoom Lion Ghana Ltd to get some household dustbins for his electoral area.

The assemblyman added that after the fasting, the Assembly will be organizing a program for Zoom Lion to come and educate the residents on the dangers of dumping refuse into the stagnant water.

He, therefore, appealed to residents to adopt the new strategy of getting household dustbins to help curb the situation.
