Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Donatus Akamugre has denied claims that the National Executive Committee of the party is trying to force former President Mahama on the party as the flagbearer for the 2024 election.

There are some senior members of the National Democratic Congress who are of the view that the National Executive Committee’s meeting in the Volta Region under the guise of reorganization was one of the ways to strategize on how to bring back former President Mahama for the 2024 election.

But speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East programme, Mr. Akamugre said the issue of John Mahama leading the National Democratic Congress in 2024 or not, never came up at the Volta Region meeting.

According to Donatus Akamugre the meeting towards the re-organization of the National Democratic Congress was opt, especially when the party had just gone through an election and as expected needed to take stock and also re-organize and prepare for another political cycle.

“Some people are saying the party is re-organizing because the NDC is in tartars; that is an unfortunate statement. How can you say a party whose presidential candidate polled over six million votes is in tartars. It is only right that we consider re-organizing the National Democratic Congress after the election 2020 and also the Supreme Court hearing. It is a normal thing to do as a political party and should not be seen in a negative light.” Mr. Akamugre said.

Mr. Donatus Akamugre is the Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress and has been in that position for over 20 years, thereby making him the longest-serving Regional Secretary of a political party in Ghana.

He is counted among the foundation members of the National Democratic Congress in the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region and widely acknowledged for his role in getting students involved in the National Democratic Congress affairs in Bongo.

Unfortunately, he has not been successful in his attempt to become the National Democratic Congress’ Parliamentary Candidate for the Bongo Constituency, despite his immense contribution to the party in the constituency.
