The Social Enterprise Development Foundation of West Africa (SEND Ghana), a Non-Governmental Organization has revealed that since 2018 to date, the five regions of the north have recorded the highest under-five maternal deaths in Ghana.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on its 2021 budget analysis held in Tamale on Thursday, the Project Officer of SEND Ghana Richard Bekyieriya said the situation is worrying among the Ghanaian people, but alarming in the five regions of the north as compared to the southern parts of the country.

According to the organization’s assessment, the cause could be attributed to malnutrition among mothers and children in Ghana specifically the northern part of the country.

Mr Bekyieriya said, “The related caused of under-five maternal mortality is an issue of malnutrition which is contributing significantly to the increasing under-five maternal deaths that we are experiencing.”

He added that the issue of under-five maternal mortality is quite intense and endemic in the Northern, North East, Savanna, Upper East and the Upper West regions.

SEND Ghana, therefore, calls on the government and stakeholders in the health sector to be concerned and take urgent actions to avert the situation.
