The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has refuted claims that suggest the government’s flagship program, the 1 Village 1 Dam policy is not serving the purpose.
The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana in its research revealed that about 90 percent of the dams constructed in the Upper East region are not fit for the purpose in which they were constructed, that is irrigation.
These findings came after A1 Radio’s documentary titled ‘Thirsty Dams of the North’ which revealed the shoddy nature of some dams constructed in the region.
But speaking during a media encounter in Bolgatanga, Mr. Yakubu admitted that there were construction defects in some of the dams in the region.
Regardless, he added that the shoddy nature of some of the dams constructed in the region cannot be used as a baseline to conclude that the policy is a monumental waste of the taxpayer’s money.
