Students of the Bolgatanga – Sherigu Community Day Senior High School in the Upper East Region have demonstrated in demand for adequate learning materials.

According to the students since the establishment of the school, there have not been adequate learning materials for students and teachers thereby making teaching and learning difficult in the school.

The final year students of the school took to the streets of Sherigu through to the premise of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to protest over the lack of adequate learning materials.

The protesting students told A1 Radio that they have suffered for a long time and cannot continue hence the protest since nothing is being to address the situation.

The students’ leader (name withheld), who spoke on Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio said the situation has already persisted in the school before they were posted to the school in 2018.

He said the lack of infrastructure is so dire that they combine them in one classroom with inadequate furniture.

He revealed that the situation for example has compelled school authorities to combine general art 3 and business, 3 students, into one classroom and they are forced to drop the electives subjects.

He said they will be writing their final exam in August yet they are not being taught in the electives subjects which will form part of their grading in the final exam which is a huge disadvantage to them.

Another said they are being advised to observe covid-19 protocol but with their current situation, they cannot observe the safety protocols.

She said when they first arrived at the school they were told to mind ‘the engine of the school, not the body’ but now they cannot continue to suffer in such a situation anymore because they have endured it for three years now.

The students say all efforts to get authorities to help address the situation have proven futile which has forced them to protest.

Commenting on the protest after receiving a petition from the students, the Bolgatanga Municipality Education Director, Madam Estella Anne noted that the right measures will soon be put in place to ensure the smooth running of the school as they have informed the right authorities about the situation of the school.

The acting Municipal Chief Executive of Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Joseph Ature Amiyuure has assured the students that the assembly will take the appropriate measures to address their concerns.
