Bolgatanga Technical University introduces solar energy engineering course to tackle ‘dumsor’

Dumsor which is now a national concern may soon be a thing of the past in the Upper East Region as Bolgatanga Technical University has said it will soon introduce a solar energy engineering course to tackle it.

The course according to the university aims at turning the abundant sunshine in the region into renewable energy sources for residents.

The university further stressed that the idea has been on the drawing board for a long and will soon introduce it to interested students. 

Speaking in an exclusive interview on A1 Radio, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Samuel Alnaa noted that based on the abundant sunshine in the region, the school has collaborated with an external partner in Accra and will soon begin a solar energy engineering course to assist in tackling the energy sector.

“This course if thoroughly taught and learned by lecturers and students it will go a long way to assist our energy sector. Let me add that this course will soon start because we have partnered with a company in Accra that will be doing practical training for our students. So, we will be on course when we kick start this program.”

The university which also tagged itself as being the leading technical institution in the agricultural innovation sector in the country stressed that all year farming is key for farmers in the region, hence an irrigation technology course will also be introduced.

Irrigation Technology course, the Vice-Chancellor noted will impact students the knowledge of how to use simple machines to generate water on the deep ground for farming.

Professor Alnaa, however, explained that the irrigation technology course will help address farmers’ needs in the region especially those who are into dry season farming.
