Following the recent increase in the number of teenage pregnancies in the Upper East Region, a midwife with the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Directorate has asked parents and duty bearers to stop the hypocrisy and teach adolescents about how to practice safe sex especially the use of condom.

Madam Azika said, there are instances she has being to schools to teach the adolescent about safe sex and teachers will ask her to only talk about abstinence and not the use of contraceptives especially condom, a situation she believes is contributing to the increase number of teenage pregnancies that the region is witnessing.

Speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio, Madam Azika added that, the pretense of only teaching adolescents about abstinence is not working because most of them are sexually active and if you do not teach them how to practice safe sex and they can not abstain, it will lead to a lot of health concern in society not only teenage pregnancies.

She further said, lack of parental control is a contributory factor to current situation because adolescents now organize parties and spend a lot of time with the opposite sex which can lead them to engaging in intercourse.

Madam Azika concluded by saying that “we don’t drink water to become pregnant, so we can decide to not educate them and they will keep getting pregnant.”
