Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission in Ghana, Sulemana Nelson, has cautioned all and sundry to see tree planting as the only way for human survival.

According to him, people should have in mind that the last tree that dies, the human existence will cease to exist hence the need to stop the felling of trees.

Mr. Sulemana, made this comment in Bolgatanga when he paid a working visit to the region as part of the Forestry Commission’s preparation for the launching of the Green Ghana project.

He noted that, the region can only regain its lost forestry cover when the populace focuses seriously on the exercise and stop felling trees for firewood.

Touching on why the Green Ghana project could be the only game-changer for growth and the region as a whole, Mr. Sulemana noted that other regions with good vegetation cover struggle not for rains and often do well in their all year-round farming.

“…with good trees planted around, this region will witness no hunger amongst its people because the food will be abundant. People will be doing all year farming just like what is happening in the Southern sectors. We need to embrace this initiative to create that needed employment we want for our people.”

The region, Mr. Sulemana said, is not far from desertification due to the continuous felling of trees for wood and other stuffs hence the calls for the adaptation of the Green Ghana project.

The Green Ghana project is an initiative introduced by the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources to inculcate the culture of tree planting amongst the Ghanaian populace.

The initiative, which will begin on June 11 2021 seeks to plant 5 million trees across the country.
